NIT Jamshedpur has officially released the information brochure for the National Institute of Technology Master of Computer Applications Common Entrance Test (NIMCET) 2026. This entrance exam is the gateway for admission into the MCA programs offered by participating NITs across India, including those at Agartala, Allahabad, Bhopal, Jamshedpur, Kurukshetra, Raipur, Surathkal, Tiruchirappalli, and Warangal. The entrance test is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
The application process for NIMCET 2026 will be conducted entirely online. The portal will open for registrations on April 1, 2026, and will remain active until April 30, 2026. Candidates must hold a B.Sc. / B.Sc. (Hons) / BCA / BIT / B.Voc. (Computer Science/ Computer Applications) degree with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD) or a B.E./B.Tech. degree from a recognized university. A crucial requirement is that candidates must have studied Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects in their qualifying degree.
The NIMCET 2026 question paper will consist of 120 multiple-choice questions to be answered within two hours. The distribution of questions remains unchanged: Mathematics (50 questions), Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning (40 questions), Computer Awareness (10 questions), and General English (20 questions). Each correct answer will award 4 marks, while each incorrect answer will result in a negative marking of 1 mark. This year, the organizing committee has announced an increase in the number of exam centers to 35 cities to accommodate the rising number of applicants.
NIT Jamshedpur has also introduced a new counseling module that will be fully automated. After the results are declared on June 25, 2026, successful candidates will be required to fill in their preferences for institutes online. The seat allotment will be based on the NIMCET rank and the availability of seats in the respective categories. Candidates are advised to regularly check the nimcet.admissions.nic.in portal for updates regarding the admit card download and the detailed counseling schedule.
Experts in the field of computer education suggest that NIMCET remains one of the most competitive exams for IT aspirants in India. With the surge in demand for software developers and data scientists, an MCA from a premier NIT is highly valued in the industry. Students are recommended to focus on their mathematical foundations, as the Mathematics section carries the highest weightage in the ranking process.
