FMGE is a mandatory screening test for Indian students who have completed their MBBS or equivalent medical degree from foreign medical institutions. To practice medicine in India or to get registered with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or State Medical Councils (SMC), passing this exam is a legal requirement. It ensures that the candidate's medical knowledge meets the standards required for the Indian healthcare system.

The full form of FMGE is Foreign Medical Graduate Examination. It is also popularly known as the MCI Screening Test, as it was previously regulated by the Medical Council of India (now replaced by the National Medical Commission).

Over the years, the FMGE has gained a reputation for being a highly competitive and challenging exam. While the number of Indian students going abroad for medical education (especially to countries like Russia, China, Philippines, and Georgia) has increased, the passing percentage of FMGE has historically fluctuated between 10% to 25%. This highlights the need for rigorous preparation and a deep understanding of the clinical subjects.

Candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria to appear for FMGE 2026:

• Nationality: Must be a citizen of India or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
• Qualification: Must possess a primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) confirmed by the Indian Embassy concerned, to be a recognized qualification for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the country in which the institution is located.
• Documents: Candidates must provide proof of passing the primary medical qualification on or before the cutoff date specified by NBEMS.
• Exemption: Candidates who have completed their undergraduate and postgraduate medical studies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and United States of America are generally exempt from FMGE.

The application process for FMGE 2026 is entirely online. Candidates must follow these steps:

• Complete the registration to receive a User ID and Password.
• Fill out the application form with personal, educational, and contact details.
• Upload scanned documents including photograph, signature, and thumb impression.
• Pay the examination fee via online payment gateways (Credit/Debit Card or Net Banking).
• Download and print the final application confirmation page.

The FMGE syllabus is divided into three main areas based on the Indian MBBS curriculum:

• Pre-Clinical Subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry.
• Para-Clinical Subjects: Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Social and Preventive Medicine.

The syllabus for FMGE 2026 is based on the Graduate Medical Education Regulations issued by the National Medical Commission. It covers all major subjects taught during the MBBS course in India. The weightage is distributed across two parts:

5. Issuance of the FMGE Pass Certificate.
6. Applying to NMC/SMC for registration.

FMGE is a qualifying exam for graduates of all recognized foreign medical universities. While there are no "participating universities" in India for the exam itself, the degree must be from an institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognized by the government of that respective country.

The FMGE 2026 results will be published on the official NBEMS website in the form of a PDF merit list. The result includes the candidate's roll number, score (out of 300), and qualifying status. Individual scorecards can be downloaded by logging into the portal using candidate credentials after the result declaration.

Once a candidate qualifies for FMGE 2026:

• They must collect their FMGE Pass Certificate in person from the NBEMS office.
• They must complete a mandatory one-year internship in an Indian hospital approved by the NMC.
• After the internship, they can apply for permanent registration with the National Medical Commission or State Medical Council to practice medicine independently in India.

There is no counselling process for FMGE. Since it is a licensing exam and not a competitive entrance exam for seat allocation, candidates who score 150 marks or more are simply declared 'Pass'. The next step is the internship, which candidates must apply for individually at various hospitals or through state-specific portals.

The cut-off for FMGE is fixed and does not change based on candidate performance. To qualify, a candidate must secure a minimum of 150 marks out of 300. There are no category-based relaxations (SC/ST/OBC) for the FMGE qualifying score.
