MBBS

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the primary professional undergraduate degree in the field of medicine in India. It is a highly prestigious and rigorous course that prepares students to become licensed medical practitioners. The course is regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The curriculum is designed to provide a deep understanding of human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Upon completion, graduates are awarded the title of 'Doctor' (Dr.) and are eligible to practice medicine or pursue higher specializations like MD or MS.

To secure admission into an MBBS program in India, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Academic Qualification: Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
• Minimum Marks: A minimum of 50% aggregate marks in PCB for General category, and 40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates.
• Age Limit: The candidate must be at least 17 years old at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before 31st December of the year of admission.
• Entrance Exam: Qualifying the NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is mandatory for all students, including those seeking admission to private and deemed universities.

The total duration of the MBBS course is 5.5 years. This is divided into two main parts:

• Academic Study: 4.5 years of classroom and laboratory-based learning divided into 9 semesters.
• Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI): 1 year of practical clinical training in various hospital departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

The MBBS syllabus is divided into three phases: Pre-clinical, Para-clinical, and Clinical.

• Private/Deemed Universities: Fees can range from INR 10 Lakhs to INR 25 Lakhs per year.

Scholarships are available through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), state government schemes, and merit-based institutional scholarships for economically weaker sections.

Graduates have diverse career paths available after completing their MBBS:

Currently, there is only one major entrance exam for MBBS in India:

• NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test): Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is the single window entrance for all medical colleges in India, including AIIMS and JIPMER.
