The full form of the NID Entrance Exam is the National Institute of Design - Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT). It consists of two stages: DAT Prelims and DAT Mains (which includes a Studio Test and sometimes an Interview).

Over the years, the NID DAT has evolved from a purely drawing-based test to a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive and creative skills. The introduction of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) alongside subjective drawing tasks in the Prelims has balanced the assessment. Competition has intensified, with thousands of applicants vying for approximately 425-450 seats across various NID campuses.

To be eligible for NID DAT 2026, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed or be appearing for the 10+2 (Higher Secondary) examination in any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts) from a recognized board.
• Age Limit: For General category, the candidate must be born on or after July 1, 2006 (Relaxation applies for reserved categories).
• Nationality: Indian Nationals, Foreign Nationals, and NRI/PIO/OCI candidates are eligible.

The application process for NID DAT 2026 is entirely online:

1. Registration: Create an account on the official NID admissions portal.
2. Fill Application Form: Enter personal, educational, and contact details.
3. Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of photographs, signatures, and category certificates (if applicable).

The B.Des program at NID offers various specializations including:

The admission journey follows these steps:

Counselling is conducted online. Candidates are required to submit their campus preferences. Seats are allotted based on the Final Merit Rank, category, and availability of seats in the preferred NID campus. Document verification is a mandatory part of this stage.

The cut-off for NID DAT 2026 will vary depending on the difficulty of the paper and the number of applicants. Generally, a percentile above 90 is required for the General category to get into the Ahmedabad campus. Each NID campus and category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) has separate cut-off marks.
