If you are a Class 12 student in Hyderabad or anywhere in Telangana and you want to study law at a National Law University (NLU), CLAT 2027 is the exam that decides it. The application window closes on 31 October 2026, so if you have not applied yet, you have only a few days left.

This guide explains everything in simple steps: the dates, the fee, who can apply, what the paper looks like, and why NALSAR in Hyderabad matters so much for Telangana students.

CLAT 2027 important dates

The Consortium of National Law Universities announced these dates in its official press release of 22 July 2026:

  • Online application opened: 3 August 2026
  • Last date to apply and pay: 31 October 2026, 11:59 PM
  • CLAT 2027 exam date: Sunday, 6 December 2026
  • Exam time: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (2:00 PM to 4:40 PM for eligible PwD candidates)
  • Admit card: to be downloaded from your CLAT login; the exact date will be announced on the Consortium website
  • Counselling: December 2026 / January 2027, as per the Consortium's FAQs

The Consortium says the exam date is "subject to revision in case of necessity", so keep checking the official website, consortiumofnlus.ac.in.

CLAT 2027 application fee

You can pay the fee online only. The fee is not refundable.

  • General / OBC candidates: ₹4,000
  • SC / ST / BPL / PwD candidates: ₹3,500
  • Previous years' question papers (optional): ₹500 extra

Bank transaction charges are extra and are shown on the payment page.

One important point: if you fill more than one form, only your last form is counted, and the fee for the earlier form is not returned. So fill the form once, carefully.

Who can apply for CLAT 2027 (UG)

The eligibility for the 5-year integrated law course (BA LLB and similar) is simple:

  • No upper age limit.
  • You must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with at least 45% marks (General / OBC) or 40% marks (SC / ST / PwD).
  • Students writing their Class 12 exam in March / April 2027 can also apply. You will have to show your pass certificate at the time of admission.

So if you are in Intermediate 2nd year in Telangana right now, you are eligible to apply this year.

Documents you need to upload

Keep these ready before you open the form:

  • A recent passport-size photo with a plain background
  • Your signature
  • Category certificate (if applying under SC / ST / OBC)
  • PwD certificate (if applicable)
  • BPL certificate (if applicable)

All documents must be uploaded in PDF format. You do not need to get the photo or signature attested.

If you do not have your reservation certificate yet, the Consortium says you can still apply now and submit it at the time of admission. Without it, you will not get the reserved seat.

CLAT 2027 exam pattern (UG)

CLAT is an offline (pen and paper) exam. Here is the official format:

  • Total questions: 120 multiple-choice questions
  • Marks: 1 mark per question, 120 marks in total
  • Negative marking: 0.25 mark cut for each wrong answer
  • Duration: 2 hours

Sections and approximate number of questions

  • English Language: 22 to 26 questions (about 20%)
  • Current Affairs, including General Knowledge: 28 to 32 questions (about 25%)
  • Legal Reasoning: 28 to 32 questions (about 25%)
  • Logical Reasoning: 22 to 26 questions (about 20%)
  • Quantitative Techniques: 10 to 14 questions (about 10%)

What each section really tests

  • English: passages of about 450 words that a Class 12 student can read in 5 to 7 minutes. Questions test whether you understood the main idea, can draw conclusions, and know word meanings in context.
  • Current Affairs and GK: passages from news and non-fiction. Questions cover Indian and world events, arts and culture, international affairs and important history.
  • Legal Reasoning: passages about legal or moral situations. You do not need to know law already. You apply the rule given in the passage to the facts.
  • Logical Reasoning: short passages where you find the argument, its premises and conclusion, and judge how strong it is.
  • Quantitative Techniques: Class 10 level maths, such as ratios, basic algebra, mensuration and simple statistics, applied to data given in a passage.

Tie-breaker: if two students get the same marks, the one with higher marks in Legal Reasoning ranks higher. If still tied, the older student ranks higher, and after that a computer draw of lots is used.

Why NALSAR Hyderabad matters for Telangana students

NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad is one of the 26 NLUs that admit students through CLAT. For Telangana students, it has a big advantage: a reserved quota.

The NALSAR Act says at least 25% of seats in every course must be reserved for Resident Students of Telangana. In NALSAR's CLAT 2026 brochure (the latest one published):

  • The BA LLB (Hons.) course had 132 seats for Indian students.
  • 99 seats were for All India candidates.
  • 33 seats were for Resident Students of Telangana.
  • 30% of seats were horizontally reserved for women and 5% for persons with benchmark disabilities.

This means a Telangana student competes for the 33 state seats as well as the All India seats. The CLAT 2027 seat numbers will come in NALSAR's new brochure, so check nalsar.ac.in when it is released.

Who counts as a "Resident Student of Telangana" at NALSAR

As per NALSAR's brochure, you qualify if either is true:

  • You studied in Telangana for four continuous years and wrote your qualifying exam (Class 12) in Telangana, or
  • You lived in Telangana for at least four of the last seven years and completed Class 12 at a Telangana institution.

At admission you must show a Class 12 study certificate from a Telangana institution plus either a four-year residence certificate from the Tahsildar / MRO or your school and junior college study certificates from Telangana. Start collecting these papers now. Students lose state-quota seats every year because a certificate is missing.

When you fill the CLAT form, make sure you choose your category correctly. The Consortium does not allow you to change the program, category or BPL field after you submit and pay.

Hyderabad students also often look at Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU), Visakhapatnam. Read more on our DSNLU college page.

A simple 6-week plan before 6 December

You have about six weeks between the application deadline and the exam. Here is a simple way to use them:

  • Every day: read one good English newspaper for 45 minutes. This helps English, Current Affairs and Legal Reasoning together.
  • Every day: solve one full passage set from each section.
  • Twice a week: take a full 2-hour mock under exam timing. Do it in pen and paper, because CLAT is offline.
  • After every mock: count your wrong answers. With a 0.25 negative mark, four wrong answers wipe out one right answer, so stop guessing blindly.

You can also read our main CLAT exam page and the BA LLB course guide to understand what you will study after you get in.
