The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has officially handed over the responsibility of conducting the JEE Advanced 2026 to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. This transition marks the beginning of the high-stakes phase for engineering aspirants who have performed well in the JEE Main sessions. The registration portal for the Advanced exam is expected to go live in the third week of April, shortly after the declaration of the JEE Main Session 2 results.
IIT Kanpur has released a preliminary brochure outlining the eligibility criteria and the examination pattern. While the core structure of Paper 1 and Paper 2 remains unchanged, there is a renewed emphasis on the 'Top 20 percentile' rule for board marks, which will be strictly enforced this year. Candidates must either be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards or have secured at least 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD) in their Class 12 examinations. This year, the organizing committee has also introduced a more streamlined process for PwD candidates to request scribes and extra time.
Dr. Sandeep Verma, the organizing chairperson from IIT Kanpur, stated in a press release that the institute is committed to maintaining the integrity and rigor of the exam. 'We are working on developing a robust computer-based testing environment that minimizes technical errors. New security protocols, including biometric verification at multiple stages, will be implemented across all 200+ exam cities,' he said. The exam is scheduled to be held on June 7, 2026, in two shifts.
One of the most significant updates for 2026 is the inclusion of three new exam centers in international locations, including Dubai and Singapore, to accommodate the growing number of OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) applicants. Domestically, more centers are being added in the North-Eastern states to reduce travel time for local students. This move has been welcomed by the student community in regions like Assam and Manipur.
Students are advised to start focusing on the specific problem-solving techniques required for the Advanced level, which often involves multi-concept questions. Mock tests based on the 2026 interface will be made available on the official website from mid-April. Success in JEE Advanced is the only path to securing a seat in the prestigious Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Integrated Masters programs across the 23 IITs in India.
