The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow has announced the launch of a new two-year full-time Post Graduate Programme in Sustainable Management (PGP-SM) for the 2026-2028 academic cycle. This move makes it one of the first premier management institutes in India to offer a dedicated degree focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. The program is designed to produce business leaders who can balance profitability with social and environmental responsibility.
The curriculum for the new program has been developed in consultation with global sustainability experts and industry leaders. It will cover core management subjects like Finance, Marketing, and Operations, but with a specialized focus on circular economy, carbon accounting, sustainable supply chains, and green finance. 'The corporate world is no longer just about the bottom line. Companies are being held accountable for their impact on the planet. Our new program aims to bridge the talent gap in this critical area,' said the Director of IIM Lucknow.
Admissions to the PGP-SM will be conducted through the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2025 scores, followed by a Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). Candidates with a minimum of two years of work experience in any sector are preferred, though freshers with a strong academic background in environmental sciences or engineering are also encouraged to apply. The first batch is expected to have an intake of 60 students, ensuring a high faculty-to-student ratio and personalized mentorship.
Industry experts have welcomed the move, noting that many Fortune 500 companies are now creating 'Chief Sustainability Officer' roles. 'The demand for professionals who understand both business and sustainability is skyrocketing. IIM Lucknow’s initiative is timely and will likely be followed by other IIMs in the near future,' said Rajesh Gopinath, a corporate strategist. The placement cell at IIM Lucknow is already in talks with top consulting firms and international NGOs for the inaugural batch's summer internships.
Prospective students can find the detailed syllabus and eligibility criteria on the official IIM Lucknow website. The last date to submit the supplementary application form for this specific program is March 31, 2026. This launch marks a significant milestone in Indian management education, reflecting the changing priorities of the global economy and the need for ethical leadership in the 21st century.
