The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow has announced a significant update to its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management for the upcoming 2026-28 academic session. In a move that reflects the changing global business landscape, the institute is introducing a suite of new electives focused on Sustainability Management and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. This initiative is designed to equip future business leaders with the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of climate change, resource scarcity, and social responsibility.

The new curriculum will include courses such as 'Green Finance and Investment,' 'Sustainable Supply Chain Management,' 'Circular Economy Business Models,' and 'Corporate Social Responsibility in the Digital Age.' These electives will be available to second-year students who wish to specialize in niche areas that are increasingly being prioritized by top-tier consulting firms, investment banks, and multinational corporations. The institute has collaborated with international sustainability experts and industry veterans to ensure that the course content is both academically rigorous and practically relevant.

Director of IIM Lucknow, Professor Archana Shukla, highlighted the importance of this shift during a press briefing. 'The role of a manager is no longer limited to maximizing shareholder wealth. Today’s leaders must balance profitability with the well-being of the planet and society. By integrating sustainability into our core management education, we are ensuring that our graduates are prepared for the challenges of the 2030s and beyond,' she said. The institute also plans to launch a dedicated 'Sustainability Lab' to foster research and industry projects in this domain.

This curriculum change comes at a time when the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2025 qualifiers are finalizing their admissions. While the core subjects like Marketing, Finance, and Operations remain the foundation of the MBA program, the addition of ESG-focused electives is expected to attract a new wave of students interested in social entrepreneurship and impact investing. Current students have welcomed the move, noting that many recruiters during the recent placement season specifically asked about their understanding of sustainable business practices.

Furthermore, IIM Lucknow is planning to invite guest lecturers from global organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank to provide students with a global perspective on sustainability. The institute is also in talks with several European business schools for student exchange programs specifically centered around green management. This global exposure is intended to give students a competitive edge in the international job market, where ESG expertise is currently in high demand.

Prospective students for the next CAT cycle (CAT 2026) are already taking note of these developments. Educational consultants suggest that such specialized knowledge could be a major differentiator in the personal interview (PI) rounds for IIM admissions. As the corporate world moves towards a 'Net Zero' future, IIM Lucknow’s proactive approach sets a benchmark for other premier management institutes in India to follow suit and modernize their curricula to meet the needs of the 21st-century economy.
