NIT Jamshedpur has released the official brochure for the NIT Master of Computer Applications Common Entrance Test (NIMCET) 2026, introducing several pivotal changes that will affect thousands of MCA aspirants. The most notable change is the revision of the eligibility criteria. Starting this year, candidates with a B.Sc. or B.Sc. (Hons) degree must have Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects in at least four semesters, a shift from the previous requirement of having it in all six semesters. This move is expected to broaden the pool of eligible candidates from various science backgrounds.
Furthermore, the exam pattern has seen a slight modification in the weightage of sections. While the total number of questions remains 120, the Mathematics section will now carry 600 marks out of 1000, emphasizing the importance of logical and mathematical foundations for computer science. The Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning section will account for 250 marks, while Computer Awareness and General English will carry 100 and 50 marks respectively. This adjustment aims to select candidates with stronger problem-solving skills, which are essential for the evolving software industry.
The online application process for NIMCET 2026 is set to begin on April 1, 2026, and will conclude on April 30. The entrance exam is scheduled for June 14, 2026. NIT Jamshedpur has also announced the addition of three new exam centers in Srinagar, Port Blair, and Imphal to help students from these regions avoid long-distance travel. The counseling process will be entirely online, utilizing a multi-round seat allotment system based on the NIMCET rank and the preferences of the participating NITs.
In a statement, the Admission Cell of NIT Jamshedpur highlighted that the syllabus for the Computer Awareness section has been updated to include basic concepts of Cloud Computing and Cybersecurity. 'We want our incoming MCA students to be aware of modern technological trends even before they start their post-graduation,' the statement read. This is a clear indication that the entrance test is moving towards more contemporary assessment methods. Candidates are advised to practice with the mock tests that will be made available on the official NIMCET portal from May onwards.
The NIMCET score is the primary gateway for admission into the MCA programs at NITs in Agartala, Allahabad, Bhopal, Jamshedpur, Kurukshetra, Raipur, Surathkal, Tiruchirappalli, and Warangal. Additionally, several other universities like HBTU Kanpur and IP University Delhi will also accept NIMCET 2026 scores for their respective MCA admissions. Candidates are urged to check the specific eligibility of each participating institute, as some may have additional requirements regarding minimum percentage in the qualifying degree (typically 60% for General/OBC and 55% for SC/ST).
