The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has officially released the schedule for the Situation Test 2026, which serves as the second and final stage of the admission process for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme. Candidates who successfully cleared the General Ability Test (GAT) and Creative Ability Test (CAT) held in February are now required to appear for this practical examination. The Situation Test is scheduled to be held between April 10 and April 14, 2026, across various NIFT campuses including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

The Situation Test is a hands-on exam where candidates are provided with a set of materials—such as cardboard, wire, cloth, and clay—and are asked to create a three-dimensional model based on a given theme within two hours. This year, NIFT has introduced a new evaluation criterion that places 20% weightage on the 'Write-up' accompanying the model. Candidates must explain the concept behind their creation in English, and for the first time, the board has clarified that the write-up will be evaluated for its clarity of thought and design sensitivity rather than just grammatical accuracy.

Pooja Reddy, a design mentor at a top coaching center, advised students to focus on material handling and time management. 'The Situation Test is not just about making something beautiful; it's about solving a problem with limited resources. In 2025, the themes were centered around sustainable packaging and urban spaces. We expect the 2026 themes to lean towards 'Digital India' or 'Traditional Crafts Integration.' Students should practice working with unconventional materials like sandpaper and straws, which are often provided to test their creativity,' she said.

NIFT has also updated its COVID-era protocols, finally returning to full-capacity physical centers with no online alternative for the Situation Test. Candidates must download their call letters from the official NIFT admissions portal starting March 20. Each candidate is assigned a specific date and session, and no requests for change of center or date will be entertained. The institute has also prohibited the use of any external materials, including glue or specialized cutters, ensuring a level playing field for all participants.

The final merit list, which combines scores from the GAT (30%), CAT (50%), and Situation Test (20%), is expected to be announced by the third week of May 2026. Successful candidates will then participate in a centralized online counseling process for seat allocation across the 18 NIFT campuses. With the fashion industry in India seeing a 15% growth in the luxury and retail sectors, a degree from NIFT continues to be the most sought-after credential for aspiring designers.
