The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued an official notification today, March 15, 2026, extending the registration deadline for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026. Originally set to close tonight, the application window will now remain open until 11:50 PM on March 25, 2026. This decision comes after several student organizations and individual aspirants reported technical difficulties in uploading documents and completing fee payments on the official portal due to heavy server traffic.

This extension is viewed as a significant relief for thousands of students aiming for admissions into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and Veterinary programs across India. The NTA has also clarified that the correction window for already submitted applications will open on March 27 and will be available for three days. During this period, candidates can rectify errors in their uploaded photographs, signatures, and specific personal details, though changes to the registered email and mobile number will not be permitted.

Prospective candidates are reminded that the eligibility criteria remain unchanged. Applicants must have completed or be appearing for their Class 12 exams with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects. The minimum age requirement of 17 years as of December 31, 2026, continues to apply. The NTA has urged students not to wait until the final hour of the new deadline to avoid a repeat of the technical glitches experienced previously.

The NEET UG 2026 exam is scheduled to be held on May 3, 2026, in a pen-and-paper (offline) mode. With the number of medical seats in India seeing a steady increase due to the establishment of new AIIMS and state-run medical colleges, the competition remains fierce. Approximately 21 lakh students are expected to compete for around 1.1 lakh MBBS seats this year. The extension of the deadline is not expected to delay the release of admit cards, which are slated for the last week of April.

Medical education experts advise students to use this extra time to double-check their category certificates and EWS documentation, as these are crucial during the counseling phase. 'Many students lose out on their preferred seats due to faulty documentation despite having a high score,' noted Dr. Meenakshi Sarin, an education consultant. The NTA helpdesk remains active for any queries regarding the application process, and students are encouraged to follow only official notifications on the neet.nta.nic.in portal.
