Ministry of Education Launches 'Prerna' Scholarship for Rural STEM Students for 2026-27 Session

In a significant move to bridge the urban-rural divide in technical education, the Ministry of Education has announced the launch of the 'Prerna' Scholarship Scheme for the academic year 2026-27. The initiative is designed to identify and support 50,000 meritorious students from rural backgrounds who have secured admission into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses at the undergraduate level. The scholarship was officially unveiled by the Union Education Minister during a national conference on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Under the Prerna scheme, selected students will receive an annual stipend of INR 75,000 to cover tuition fees, books, and living expenses. To be eligible, a student must have completed their Class 12 education from a government school located in a village or a notified rural block and must have an annual family income of less than INR 6 lakh. The selection will be based on a combination of their Class 12 marks and their performance in national-level entrance exams like JEE Main, NEET, or CUET.
'The goal of Prerna is to ensure that no brilliant mind in our villages is held back by financial constraints,' the Education Minister stated during the launch. 'We want to see more engineers, scientists, and doctors emerging from our rural heartlands, contributing to the nation's progress.' The scholarship also includes a mentorship component, where recipients will be paired with industry professionals and senior academicians who will guide them throughout their four-year degree programs.
The application process for the Prerna scholarship will be handled through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The window for applications is expected to open on July 1, 2026, following the completion of major entrance exam results and admission cycles. Students will need to upload their domicile certificates, income certificates verified by local tehsildars, and proof of admission into a recognized higher education institution. A dedicated cell has been created within the Ministry to oversee the transparent disbursement of funds directly into the students' Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
Educational experts have welcomed the move, noting that while many scholarships exist, few are specifically targeted at the rural STEM pipeline. 'This is a strategic investment in the future of India's workforce,' said Dr. Sarita Gupta, an education policy analyst. 'By focusing on STEM, the government is aligning its social welfare goals with the country's need for technical expertise in sectors like renewable energy, space tech, and digital infrastructure.'
The Ministry also plans to collaborate with state education boards to identify potential candidates early in their Class 11 and 12 years to provide them with additional coaching and resources. This proactive approach is expected to increase the success rate of rural students in competitive exams. The 'Prerna' portal will also feature a dashboard for real-time tracking of applications and fund transfers, ensuring accountability and reducing the bureaucratic delays that have sometimes plagued similar schemes in the past.
