In a strategic move to streamline the academic calendar, the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has announced the schedule for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027 today, March 15, 2026. Continuing the trend established in recent years, the entrance exam for the 2027 academic session will be held on December 6, 2026. This early schedule is designed to alleviate the pressure on students who would otherwise have to balance law entrance preparations with their Class 12 board examinations in the spring.

The registration process for CLAT 2027 is slated to begin on July 1, 2026, and will remain open until October 25, 2026. The consortium has emphasized that the early announcement gives aspirants nearly nine months to plan their study schedules. The exam will be conducted in a single shift from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM across more than 130 cities in India. The test format remains a 120-mark paper consisting of five sections: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques.

This year, the consortium has hinted at a slight modification in the Legal Reasoning section to include more contemporary legal issues and landmark judgments from 2025 and 2026. 'The goal is to test the candidate's ability to apply legal principles to new situations rather than their knowledge of specific laws,' stated a member of the CLAT Executive Committee. The UG-CLAT is the gateway for admission to the 5-year integrated LL.B. and LL.M. programs at 24 participating National Law Universities.

For the PG-CLAT (LL.M.), the syllabus will continue to focus on various areas of law including Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, and Criminal Law. The consortium has also announced that two new private universities have signed MoUs to use CLAT 2027 scores for their law admissions, expanding the opportunities for candidates who may not secure a seat in the top NLUs.

Students currently in Class 11 are encouraged to start their preparation now, focusing particularly on reading comprehension and logical consistency. The consortium will release a series of official sample papers starting in August 2026 to help candidates understand the difficulty level and the nature of the questions. As the legal profession in India continues to evolve with the introduction of new digital laws and environmental regulations, the CLAT remains the most prestigious entry point for aspiring lawyers in the country.
