The Uttarakhand Board of School Education (UBSE) is an agency of the Government of Uttarakhand entrusted with the responsibilities of prescribing courses of instructions and text books and conducting examinations for secondary school students in the state. It is a high-level educational body that plays a pivotal role in maintaining the standards of school education across Uttarakhand.

Following the formation of the state of Uttarakhand in 2000, the need for a dedicated state education board was paramount. The UBSE was established in 2001 and was initially headquartered in Ramnagar, Nainital. Before its formation, the examinations for schools in the region were conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Board.

Since its inception, the board has evolved to include modern digital practices for registration and result publication, ensuring a transparent educational environment for thousands of students every year.

The UBSE has jurisdiction over the entire state of Uttarakhand. There are over 10,000 schools affiliated with the board, including government-run schools, government-aided schools, and private institutions. The schools are spread across all 13 districts of the state, from the plains of Haridwar to the high-altitude regions of Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi.

The Class 10 (High School) examination typically consists of six subjects. The core subjects include:

• Hindi
• English
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social Science
• One elective/additional subject (e.g., Sanskrit, IT, Home Science)

The Class 12 (Intermediate) exams are conducted for three main streams: Science, Commerce, and Arts. The examination pattern includes:

• Theory: 70 to 80 marks depending on the subject.
• Practicals/Project: 20 to 30 marks.

Students must pass both theory and practical exams separately in subjects that involve lab work. The syllabus is designed to align with national competitive exams like JEE and NEET for science students.

For the academic session 2025-26, the UBSE 2026 Exams are expected to be conducted in the months of February and March 2026. Practical examinations are usually held in January 2026.

Students must meet the following criteria to appear for the UBSE exams:

• Regular students must have a minimum of 75% attendance in their respective schools.
• Students must have successfully completed the previous grade (Class 9 for High School and Class 11 for Intermediate).
• Registration forms are usually filled out through the schools in the months of September and October.
• Private candidates can register directly through designated government centers.

The UBSE results are generally announced in May or June. To pass the Uttarakhand Board exams, a student must secure at least 33% marks in each individual subject and in the aggregate.

Students who fail in one or two subjects may be eligible to appear for the Compartmental Examinations held shortly after the main results. Official results are hosted on uaresults.nic.in.

The Uttarakhand Board facilitates several scholarship programs for meritorious students, including:

• State Merit Scholarship: For top rankers in Class 10 and 12.
• INSPIRE Scholarship: For top 1% students in the Science stream for pursuing higher education in natural sciences.
• National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS): Targeted at economically weaker students.
