Established in 1910, the Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education has a long-standing history of academic excellence. Initially, it functioned as a separate entity until 1975, when the Directorate of Government Examinations was formed as a separate directorate to streamline the examination process. In 1978, the Higher Secondary (10+2) system was introduced in the state, replacing the old Pre-University Course (PUC). Today, the board oversees a unified system of school education, merging different streams like Oriental, Matriculation, and Anglo-Indian into a common syllabus system.

The board has jurisdiction over thousands of schools including:

While its primary focus is the state of Tamil Nadu, it also oversees the curriculum and examinations for several schools in the Union Territory of Puducherry (specifically the regions of Puducherry and Karaikal).

The SSLC (Class 10) examination follows a comprehensive evaluation pattern. Students are typically required to appear for five main subjects:

The syllabus is designed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), focusing on foundational concepts and practical application.

The HSC (Class 12) examinations are conducted for three main streams: Science, Commerce, and Vocational. The total marks for each subject are 100, which includes internal assessments and practical exams where applicable.

• General Stream: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Commerce, Accountancy.
• Vocational Stream: Specialized technical subjects along with language papers.

The grading system utilizes a 9-point scale, and students must secure a minimum of 35% in each subject to be declared successful.

For the academic year 2025-2026, the tentative schedule is as follows:

• HSC (Class 12) Exams: Expected to commence in the first week of March 2026 and conclude by the end of March 2026.
• SSLC (Class 10) Exams: Expected to start in the last week of March 2026 and end in mid-April 2026.

Students currently enrolled in recognized schools in Tamil Nadu are registered through their respective institutions. Private candidates must register through Nodal Centres (Government Examinations Service Centres) set up across various districts.

Registration Steps:

1. Submission of application forms through the school portal or nodal center.
2. Payment of examination fees as prescribed by the DGE.
3. Verification of candidate details and photo upload.
4. Issuance of Hall Tickets via the official portal.

The results for the 2026 board exams are anticipated to be announced in May 2026. Students can check their scores at tnresults.nic.in.

Passing Criteria:

• A minimum of 35 marks out of 100 in each subject is required.
• For subjects with practicals, students must pass in both theory and practical components separately.
• Students failing in one or more subjects can appear for the Supplementary Examinations usually held in June/July.
