The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) is the primary state-level authority responsible for school education in the Indian state of Nagaland. Established with the goal of regulating, supervising, and developing the educational standards in the state, the board conducts the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations.

The NBSE was set up through an Act of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1973 and started functioning on 1st October 1974. Since its inception, the board has expanded its jurisdiction to cover secondary and higher secondary schools across the entire state of Nagaland. Its primary headquarters is located in Kohima.

Over the decades, NBSE has transitioned from a basic administrative body to a comprehensive educational board that handles curriculum design, textbook prescription, and professional development for teachers.

The Nagaland Board of School Education exclusively governs the school education system within the state of Nagaland. It oversees both government and private schools across all districts, including Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, and others.

• The board conducts examinations for regular, private, and vocational candidates.

The Class 10 examination, known as the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC), consists of six external subjects and several internally assessed subjects. The NBSE HSLC Syllabus covers subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, and a Second Language.

The grading system follows a 9-point scale ranging from A1 (top performers) to E2 (needs improvement).

The Class 12 examination is known as the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC). It is divided into three main streams: Arts, Science, and Commerce.

• Arts: Focuses on History, Political Science, Economics, and Sociology.
• Science: Includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
• Commerce: Covers Accountancy, Business Studies, and Entrepreneurship.

The NBSE 2026 Board Exams are tentatively scheduled to be held in February and March 2026. The official time table is usually released in December or January.

• HSLC (Class 10) 2026: Expected to start in the second week of February 2026.
• HSSLC (Class 12) 2026: Expected to start in the first week of February 2026.

To appear for the NBSE board exams, students must meet the following criteria:

• Regular Students: Must have the required attendance in an NBSE-affiliated school and pass the internal selection tests.
• Private Candidates: Must register through the board's portal or designated centers if they meet specific eligibility rules.

Registration for the 2026 exams is usually handled by the respective schools through the NBSE Online Portal during the months of August and September.

To pass the NBSE HSLC and HSSLC exams, a student must secure a minimum of 33% marks in each subject (both theory and internal/practical combined). The board releases results online approximately 45-60 days after the completion of the exams.

Students can check their scores on the NBSE Results Portal. The board also provides a provision for 'Improvement Exams' for students who wish to better their scores in specific subjects.
