The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) is an autonomous body established under the provisions of the Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act 1965. It is one of the most prominent education boards in India, responsible for regulating secondary and higher secondary education in the state of Maharashtra.

The board was established on January 1, 1966, to regulate certain matters pertaining to secondary education in the state of Maharashtra. It was later amended in 1977, and the name was changed to its current form to include Higher Secondary education.

Headquartered in Pune, the board operates through nine divisional boards located in Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nasik, Kolhapur, Amravati, Latur, Nagpur, and Ratnagiri. These divisions ensure the smooth conduct of examinations and administrative tasks across different geographical zones of the state.

MSBSHSE has jurisdiction solely over the state of Maharashtra. It is the largest board in the state in terms of student enrollment, with over 21,000 secondary schools (SSC) and approximately 7,000 higher secondary schools/junior colleges (HSC) affiliated with it.

• SSC Schools: Provide education from Class 1 to Class 10.
• HSC Colleges: Provide specialized streams for Class 11 and Class 12.

The Class 10 (SSC) examination is a critical milestone for students in Maharashtra. The curriculum is designed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

The Class 12 (HSC) exam is conducted across three primary streams: Science, Commerce, and Arts. There is also a Vocational stream (MCVC).

• Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Mathematics, and English are core subjects.
• Commerce: Book Keeping & Accountancy, Economics, OCM, and SP/Maths.
• Arts: History, Geography, Political Science, and Psychology.

The evaluation includes a mix of theory exams (usually 70-80 marks) and practicals/orals (20-30 marks). The official HSC Syllabus provides the weightage for each chapter.

For the academic year 2025-2026, the MSBSHSE exams are expected to follow the traditional annual cycle:

• HSC (Class 12) Exams: Tentatively scheduled from the third week of February 2026 to the third week of March 2026.
• SSC (Class 10) Exams: Tentatively scheduled from the first week of March 2026 to the end of March 2026.

Students must meet the following criteria to appear for the board exams:

• Regular Students: Must have completed the previous grade (9th for SSC, 11th for HSC) from a recognized school/college and maintained required attendance.
• Private Candidates: Can apply through Form No. 17 if they have a gap in their education or are external students.

Registration is typically handled by the respective schools and colleges through the board's online Saral portal. Private candidates must register via the dedicated external student portal during the specified window.

To pass the SSC or HSC exams, a student must score a minimum of 35% marks in both theory and practical exams combined for most subjects. For subjects with practical components, students must also appear for the practical/internal assessment to be eligible for passing.

Results are officially announced on the Maharashtra Result Portal. The board also provides a facility for Verification of Marks and Photocopy of Answer Sheets for students who are unsatisfied with their scores.

The Maharashtra Board facilitates various state and central government scholarships for meritorious and underprivileged students:

• Pre-Matric & Post-Matric Scholarships: For SC/ST/OBC/VJNT categories.
• Eklavya Scholarship: For students pursuing higher education.
• State Government Open Merit Scholarship: Awarded to top-ranking students in the SSC and HSC exams.
