The Kerala Board of Public Examinations (KBPE), also known as the Pareeksha Bhavan, is the regulatory body responsible for conducting public examinations in the state of Kerala. Established under the Department of General Education, Government of Kerala, the board was created to streamline the examination process in a state known for its high literacy rates. Over the decades, KBPE has evolved its curriculum to match national standards while retaining its focus on holistic education. It works in coordination with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Kerala to design the academic framework.

While KBPE primarily serves schools within the state of Kerala, its jurisdiction extends beyond state borders. Affiliated schools include:

• Government and Private Aided schools in Kerala.
• Schools in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.
• A selected number of schools in the Gulf countries (UAE, Oman, Qatar, etc.) catering to the Indian diaspora.

The Class 10 (SSLC) exam is the most critical milestone under KBPE. The syllabus is prescribed by SCERT Kerala. The exam pattern includes:

• Continuous Evaluation (CE): Internal assessments, projects, and practicals.
• Terminal Evaluation (TE): The final written examination.

The board uses a 9-point grading system ranging from A+ (Outstanding) to E (Needs Improvement). Students must secure at least a D+ grade in each subject to pass.

The Higher Secondary Examinations (Class 12 or Plus Two) are technically conducted by the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education (DHSE), which operates under the same administrative umbrella as KBPE. The curriculum covers Science, Commerce, and Humanities streams. Evaluation is split into Continuous Evaluation (CE), Practical Evaluation (PE), and Terminal Evaluation (TE). The KBPE SSLC 2026 exams are tentatively scheduled to begin in the first week of March 2026 and conclude by the end of the month. The Higher Secondary (Plus Two) exams are expected to run concurrently. The official time table is usually released in December 2025 or January 2026.

Students enrolled in Class 10 in affiliated schools are eligible for the SSLC exam. Private candidates (those who have previously failed or are over-aged) can apply through the Private Candidate category. Registration is typically handled by the respective school heads through the Sampoorna portal, where student data is uploaded for admit card generation.

Results are published on the official Kerala Results portal. To be declared successful, a student must obtain a minimum of 30% in Terminal Evaluation and an aggregate of 35% (D+ grade) including Continuous Evaluation. Students who fail in one or more subjects can appear for the SAY (Save A Year) examination held shortly after the results.

The Kerala government offers several incentives for high-performing students, including:

• NMMS: National Means cum Merit Scholarship.
