Since its inception, the Council has grown significantly, taking over the responsibility of conducting the Higher Secondary Examination (HSE) from the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM). The council is headquartered in Imphal and works under the Department of Education, Government of Manipur.

COHSEM's jurisdiction is limited to the state of Manipur. All government-run and privately managed higher secondary schools, junior colleges, and integrated schools within Manipur must be affiliated with COHSEM to offer the Higher Secondary curriculum.

• Government Higher Secondary Schools: Fully funded and managed by the State Government.
• Private Schools: Independently managed but following the COHSEM syllabus and examination norms.

It is important to note that COHSEM does not conduct the Class 10 (HSLC) examinations. In Manipur, the Class 10 exams are conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM).

However, COHSEM manages the transition for students entering Class 11. The grading system for the qualifying HSLC exam follows a CGPA and marks-based system which determines eligibility for the streams (Science, Arts, Commerce) offered at the Higher Secondary level under COHSEM.

The COHSEM Class 12 Higher Secondary Examination (HSE) is divided into three main streams: Science, Arts, and Commerce. The syllabus is designed to align with national standards (NCERT) to help students prepare for competitive exams like NEET and JEE.

• Exam Pattern: Each subject typically carries 100 marks, divided into Theory (70 or 100 marks) and Practical/Internal Assessment (30 marks where applicable).

• Grading: Students are graded on a scale from A1 to E. A minimum of 33% in both theory and practical components is required to pass.

The COHSEM Higher Secondary Exams 2026 are expected to be conducted in the months of February and March 2026. Practical examinations usually precede the theory papers, starting in January 2026.

To be eligible for the COHSEM Class 12 exams, a student must have successfully passed the Class 10 (HSLC) examination from BOSEM or any other recognized national/state board and completed the Class 11 course of study.

• The school submits the registration forms and requisite fees to the Council office.
• Private candidates must follow specific guidelines issued by the Council for direct enrollment.

Passing Criteria:

• A student must secure at least 33% marks in each subject.
• In subjects involving practicals, 33% must be secured in theory and practicals separately.
