The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha (CHSE Odisha) is the regulatory body responsible for managing and developing higher secondary education (Class 11 and Class 12) in the state of Odisha. Established to regulate, control, and develop Higher Secondary Education in the State, CHSE Odisha ensures a standardized curriculum and conducts the annual Plus Two (+2) examinations for Science, Commerce, Arts, and Vocational streams.

The board operates from its headquarters in Bhubaneswar and works in coordination with the Department of School and Mass Education, Government of Odisha. Students can access official updates and resources at the official CHSE website.

The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha was established in accordance with the Odisha Higher Secondary Education Act 1982. It began its operations in 1983 to take over the responsibility of managing the +2 education system, which was previously under the jurisdiction of various universities in the state.

Over the decades, the Council has evolved significantly, shifting from manual processing to a digital-first approach through the SAMS (Student Academic Management System) portal for admissions and the use of e-evaluation for board exam answer scripts to ensure transparency and speed in result declaration.

CHSE Odisha specifically governs the higher secondary education within the state of Odisha. Its jurisdiction does not extend to other states. All Government Junior Colleges, Aided Higher Secondary Schools, and Private Higher Secondary Schools in Odisha must be affiliated with CHSE to offer the +2 curriculum.

Currently, there are over 1,500 affiliated colleges and higher secondary schools across the 30 districts of Odisha. Admissions to these institutions are centralized through the SAMS Odisha portal, which manages the common application process for students.

It is important to note that CHSE Odisha does not conduct the Class 10 (Matriculation) examinations. In Odisha, the Class 10 exams are conducted by the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha.

Students who successfully clear the BSE Odisha Class 10 exams or equivalent exams from other boards (like CBSE or ICSE) then transition to the CHSE system for their Class 11 and Class 12 studies. The grading system for Class 10 under BSE Odisha typically follows a 9-point scale (A1 to F), which determines eligibility for admission into CHSE-affiliated colleges.

The CHSE Class 12 (Plus Two) curriculum is divided into four main streams: Science, Commerce, Arts, and Vocational. The examination pattern usually consists of:

• Theory Papers: 70 to 100 marks depending on the subject.
• Practical/Project Work: 20 to 30 marks for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography.
• Internal Assessment: Continuous evaluation components introduced recently to align with national standards.

The syllabus is largely aligned with the NCERT pattern for Science subjects to help students prepare for national competitive exams like NEET and JEE. The grading is based on marks obtained, with 33% being the minimum requirement to pass in each subject and in aggregate.

For the academic session 2025-2026, the CHSE Odisha Class 12 Board Exams are tentatively scheduled to be held in February and March 2026. The practical examinations usually precede the theory exams, often taking place in January 2026.

To be eligible for the CHSE Odisha Higher Secondary Examination, a student must:

• Have passed the High School Certificate (HSC) examination from BSE Odisha or an equivalent examination recognized by the Council.
• Have completed the two-year regular course of study in an affiliated Higher Secondary School.
• Maintain a minimum required attendance of 75% in classes.

The registration process is primarily handled through the school/college authorities via the SAMS portal. Private candidates must register through designated government colleges following the official notification issued by the Council.

CHSE Odisha results are usually announced within 45 to 60 days after the completion of exams. Students can check their scores on the Orissa Results portal. The passing criteria are as follows:

• A student must secure at least 33% marks in each subject (including both theory and practical components separately).
• An aggregate of 33% is required to be declared 'Pass'.
• Students scoring above 60% are awarded 1st Division, 45% to 60% receive 2nd Division, and 33% to 45% receive 3rd Division.

Candidates who fail in one or more subjects can apply for the Instant Examination (Supplementary) held shortly after the main results are declared.

Students performing exceptionally well in CHSE Odisha exams are eligible for various state and central scholarships, including:

• Prerana Scholarship: For SC/ST/OBC/SEBC students.
• Medhabruti: A merit-based scholarship by the Government of Odisha for students pursuing higher education.
• Kalia Scholarship: For children of beneficiaries of the KALIA scheme.
• Inspire Scholarship: For top 1% performers in the Science stream to pursue careers in basic sciences.

Top scorers often receive laptops or financial rewards under various state-sponsored youth incentive schemes.
