BSEB

The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) is a statutory body under Section 3 of the Bihar School Examination Board Act - 1952 which is functioning under the Government of Bihar devised to conduct examinations at secondary and senior secondary standard in both government and private schools belonging to the State of Bihar.

BSEB was established in 1952 with the primary objective of regulating and supervising the system of intermediate and secondary education in Bihar. Over the decades, it has evolved into one of the largest state boards in India in terms of the number of students appearing for examinations.

In addition to the annual Board Examinations, the BSEB also conducts departmental examinations such as the Diploma in Physical Education, Certificate in Physical Education, and Teachers Training Examination under terms and conditions as may be laid down by the State Government.

BSEB's jurisdiction is limited strictly to the state of Bihar. All government schools, as well as many private schools within the 38 districts of Bihar, are affiliated with this board. The board manages education for:

The board ensures that all affiliated institutions follow the Bihar government's educational policies and the NCERT-based curriculum adapted for the state.

The BSEB Matric (Class 10) examination usually consists of five compulsory subjects and one optional subject. The main subjects include Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and two Language papers (typically Hindi and English).

The BSEB Intermediate (Class 12) exams are divided into three main streams: Science, Commerce, and Arts. Each stream has its own set of elective and compulsory subjects.

• Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Math, Language.
• Commerce: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Language.
• Arts: History, Political Science, Geography, Psychology, Language.

The exam pattern follows the 50-50 rule where 50% of the paper consists of objective-type questions to be answered on OMR sheets, facilitating faster and more transparent evaluation.

The BSEB typically conducts the annual board exams in the month of February. For the academic session 2025-26, the tentative schedule is as follows:

• Intermediate (Class 12) 2026: First and second week of February 2026.
• Matric (Class 10) 2026: Third and fourth week of February 2026.

The official time table is usually released in December 2025 on the BSEB notification portal. Students are advised to check the site regularly for the specific date sheet.

To be eligible for the BSEB exams, a student must meet the following criteria:

• Class 10: Must have passed Class 9 and be at least 14 years of age as of March 1st of the examination year.
• Class 12: Must have passed the Matriculation (Class 10) exam from a recognized board and completed Class 11.

The registration process is usually handled through the respective schools. Students must fill out the registration form provided by the board, pay the requisite fee, and ensure their details match their official documents for the issuance of the BSEB Admit Card.

To pass the BSEB exams, a student must secure a minimum of 30% marks in each subject. For subjects involving practicals, students must pass in both theory and practical exams separately.

The board awards divisions based on the total marks:

• First Division: 300 marks and above (60%+)
• Second Division: 225 to 299 marks
• Third Division: 150 to 224 marks

Results are officially announced on the BSEB Result Portal within 30-45 days of exam completion.

BSEB toppers are eligible for various state-sponsored rewards and scholarships. The "Desharatna Dr. Rajendra Prasad Scholarship" is one of the prestigious awards given to the top rankers of the state.

Under the Bihar Board Topper Reward Scheme, top rankers often receive cash prizes, laptops, and kindle e-readers. Additionally, girl students who pass the Matric and Intermediate exams with a first division are eligible for financial assistance under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana.
