The council was formed to provide a dedicated focus on the +2 stage of education, ensuring standardized quality and administrative efficiency across the state's junior colleges and higher secondary schools.

AHSEC exercises jurisdiction exclusively over the state of Assam. It grants affiliation to various types of educational institutions, including:

It is important to note that in Assam, the Class 10 (HSLC) examinations are conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), not AHSEC. However, AHSEC sets the foundation for students entering the higher secondary level immediately following their Class 10 results.

For students transitioning from Class 10 to Class 11, AHSEC provides a bridge program and orientation via its affiliated colleges to help students adapt to the specialized streams of Arts, Science, and Commerce.

The Higher Secondary (HS) Final Year examination is the hallmark of AHSEC. The exam is conducted across four main streams: Arts, Science, Commerce, and Vocational.

• Pattern: The exams usually consist of theory papers (70-100 marks) and practical/project work (20-30 marks) depending on the subject.
• Syllabus: The council follows a comprehensive syllabus that is increasingly being aligned with the NCERT curriculum to help students compete in national-level entrance exams like JEE and NEET.
• Grading: Students are awarded divisions (First, Second, and Third) based on their aggregate marks. A minimum of 30% is generally required to pass each subject.

For the academic session 2025-2026, the AHSEC HS Final Examinations 2026 are expected to be held in the months of February and March 2026. The practical examinations are typically conducted in January 2026.

To be eligible for the AHSEC HS Final Exam, a candidate must have:

• Passed the HSLC (Class 10) examination from SEBA or an equivalent recognized board.

• Maintained the required percentage of attendance as prescribed by the council.

The Registration Process usually begins in the first year of the HS course. Schools and colleges handle the bulk of the registration via the AHSEC online portal. Students must ensure their personal details and subject choices are correctly entered to avoid issues with the admit card.

Students performing exceptionally well in AHSEC exams are eligible for various state and central government scholarships, such as:
